Beautiful shot no matter what camera you took it on. Took a little look at your portfolio, some wonderful work. I’m really hoping more work comes your way (I’m also curious if Apple paid you or not, I’m really hoping they compensated you well and if not I wish you the best anyway.)

Edit: If I see the photo in situ I promise to take a photo and send it to you.

And a further proof that the camera does not make the picture. So glad that Apple has put your work out on a global basis, but you could have done this with any camera. Just saw a mention of this on The Online Photographer blog. How do we see more of your work?

The look on his face would stop a person dead in their tracks…and hold them there…until they can approach with caution. Can’t say that I blame him, I’m glad he can convey with that look, ‘STOP RIGHT THERE!’ to well meaning, but bugaboo fans who may want more and more and more! That photo is a favorite of mine. I also like the closed eyes one as well. If I’m not mistaken, there is also another one of yours, that I’ve seen, where his look is softer, sweeter, as his looks directly at you, eyes are alert, but seem to have a childlike trusting innocence that belies his then 60 plus age. I found that remarkable. I don’t know where I’ve seen that one but I can still see it plainly in my mind’s eye. Your photos are stricking in a way reminiscent of David Bailey’s stunning photos of Paul and John Lennon. Those were gorgeous and so are yours.

Your whole point is very valid and quite right. I must say, though, that I didn’t go into this cynically. Also, perhaps my use of ‘ruthless’ was the wrong word. It’s his internal steeliness that I wanted to get to and when it comes down to it I just felt that there had not been a strong, dignified simple portrait of him done for years. I think it has real strength to it. Another point I have tried to make is that sometimes you have to have that confrontation in order to get to the meat, otherwise as pleasant as the encounter may be, you are only left with froth, which is what I feel he often offers. Hence my line to him about being ‘an honest man’. That, in my opinion, comes from an unwillingness to collaborate. I felt like he was imposing himself on me. That’s fine but I’d be failing in my job if I accepted that. I have done many similar portraits with people who open themselves to the collaborative process. Believe me, I am a huge fan. I love his music but I wanted something more than what he was prepared to give. I actually wanted to do him justice and produce something that will survive long after we’ve all gone. So I had to dig deep into myself and not be afraid to generate friction. After all, as the painter John Singer Sargent once said, to portray is to betray.

Interesting observations here. “I notice that he does this thing where he asks you questions about yourself but then doesn’t listen to a word you say in response.” I suppose he does that to distract you from getting too personal. He’s a deeply private person who has, oddly, spent a lifetime in the public eye having people wanting to know more about him than he wants to tell. I wish he’d realize that this steely resolve that you’ve captured is far, far more interesting than the thumbs-up whimsy. I’ve seen him in moments when he’s naturally funny and silly and that, too, is far more lovely than the manufactured whimsy. But then who am I to tell McCartney how to survive 50 years of public intrusion. Maybe keeping us all at bay is the only way he’s stayed sane (relatively).

Love the photos and love the story that you’ve shared with them. I felt the emotions you speak of and that’s what photography is all about … that’s the reason I got into it. Amazing. I’ve been battling for a few months to feel that spark, again, that I once got from photography and this has inspired me a lot. Thank you for that. You know, I think you’re probably right. Sometimes, when you come across something without all your tools you think, “Argh! If only I had this, if only I had that it could be so much better…..more smoooooooth.”

But what often gives a piece of work its validity, its vitality, is the energy that inspired its creation in the first place, the desire to do it right now.

So thanks for that comment. It negates a lot of doubts.

But I also looked at great length for the flaws, to seek out something that had been overlooked in composition, lighting, pose or makeup. There are none, unless the simple flash on the fingernail, but even that creats a young impression. A masterpiece of photographic creation which will, I believe, still be the benchmark for future Olymplian postures. Great stuff!. Where can I buy one to frame and hang on my study wall.
