Alexandra Hemminsley is a writer. Her new book, ‘Leap In’, on her quest to learn how to swim properly against a background of some gruelling personal experiences is an ultimately joyous celebration of the relentless challenges of life, much like the sea itself. As her Tennyson quote in the book says, “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
On an idyllic early September dawn, the sun breaking through the dense, late summer bloat of the trees, I photographed Alex for The Guardian Weekend Magazine in an Oxfordshire lake so green that it seemed all life must spring of and from it.
Thanks be to Guardian Weekend art director Maggie Murphy for this wonderful and witty layout.
